Oviedo (Asturian: Uviéu) is the capital city of the Principality of Asturias. It is also the name of the municipality that contains the city. It is the administrative and commercial centre of the region.
With a population of around two hundred and twelve thousand inhabitants, Oviedo’s commerce and hostelry traditionally serve not just the ‘Carbayones’, Oviedo locals, but also a large number of people from this central area of Asturias. The city is a delightful blend of both traditional old and new urban development.
The Cathedral, with its impressive tower, stands at the centre of Oviedo’s old quarter and the layout of the partially cobbled streets have remained practically unaltered since medieval times. The buildings of the Plaza del Fontán have been recently being restored, forming a porticoed square, creating one of the most charming spots in the city.
The area adjacent to El Fontán, has been used every Thursday, for as long as can be remembered, as a weekly marketplace for the selling of Oviedo market garden products, flowers and clothes.
Modern Oviedo offers a diverse range of leisure, cultural and entertainment services which, in recent years, have seen a great improvement with the addition of pedestrian zones in the streets where most of the city’s shops, cafes, cider-houses, restaurants and theatres are located. These zones are bustling with terraces, squares, and resting places, providing visitors with an attractive cosmopolitan environment to go about their business.
The cities transport system is efficient and well developed with good train and bus services. Fast roads link the city with the rest of Spain and it just fifteen minutes by car or bus to Asturias International Airport
